We are a Mercury free practice here in Surprise AZ, however, many people have silver/mercury fillings in their mouth. Porcelain Inlays and Tooth Colored Restorations create fillings that are beautiful but also add strength to support the weaker teeth.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF FILLINGS
DISADVANTAGES OF SILVER/MERCURY FILLINGS
Silver/mercury fillings are not pleasing to the eye, but more importantly they result in a weaker tooth structure, as the edges of the silver become weak and worn down, they can break, resulting in an unprotected tooth allowing cavities to restart. The longer the metal is in place, the mercury can expand, contract and split. They can corrode, leak and cause stains on your healthy teeth and gums as silver fillings contain 50% mercury.
ADVANTAGES OF TOOTH COLORED RESTORATION
Resin onlays are bonded to the teeth to create a tight, secure fit to the natural tooth. This treatment can be used in cases where much of the tooth structure is gone and since the resin used contain fluoride, this aids in prevention of tooth decay, providing the tooth to remain intact and stronger. The resin looks like natural teeth and does not require attachment to the gums, which in turn is healthier for you.
Replacing Silver filling with tooth colored restoration is a two appointment process.
During your first visit, Dr. Vo will remove the old filling along with any decay if needed. An impression (model) is then made of your teeth and sent to the lab, lastly, a temporary onlay is placed on the tooth.
When you come back to our Surprise office for your second visit, Dr. Vo will remove the temporary onlay and apply a conditioning gel to prepare your tooth for the new filling. Bonding cement is then placed on your tooth and a high intensity light will bond the resin to the tooth. Finally, the tooth is polished, restoring you to a natural look and feel while your teeth are stronger, healthier and protected.
